Natural Hair Journey

To have a successful natural hair journey it is important that you gain the understanding of what natural hair is.

There are many different definitions to describe “Natural Hair,” The most typical description for natural hair is described as relaxer-free hair or chemical-free hair. The hair strands are in their natural state whether straight, wavy, curly, or coils that has not been chemically altered from its original hair pattern or color.

Starting Your Natural Hair Journey

There is no right or wrong way to go natural. Your decision to go natural or thinking about it is important only to you. So, congratulations on beginning or continuing your journey. Now you will experience ups and downs along the way improving your hair care routine. You will learn what products or even styles that your hair will accept or disregard. Don’t worry it’s all part of the journey. I got through it and still learning.

If you decide to transition to natural hair, it’s important to know where your natural hair and relaxed hair meet. It’s not hard to identify because there is a noticeable difference in feel and look. At this stage you can decide to cut off the relaxed ends, or do the “Big Chop” like I did twice. I share that another time soon. Relaxers are not a bad thing as long as you get it done every 4 to 6 weeks and treated. I came across women with relaxed beautiful healthy hair. However, relaxers can leave your hair damaged, brittle, and dull over time. Don’t forget about those sensitive scalp burns. OUCH!

I remember in the beginning of my journey figuring out what product work or did not work for my hair was challenging. Yes, YouTube helped. Taking advise from curly friends was nice too. Reading blogs were helpful too. However, I still had to figure it out myself while reading labels and trying to stick close to organic ingredients for my hair. Making the selection between advertised natural hair products were seemingly confusing and difficult. Trust me I was there! Selecting your products is important and many naturals spend a lot of their time trying new products in an attempt to find the perfect a.k.a The HOLY GRAIL products for their hair.

My advice is that you must get to know and understand, and then decide which products that work best for your hair. The light bulb effect is to focus on what works for your hair! Get rid of the product(s) that don’t work, please don’t tolerate them. This process will help you make a better decision to complete your hair care routine. Just keep it simple. You will be fine.
